Travel insurance typically covers overseas medical emergencies and evacuation, trip cancellation or curtailment, lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, travel delays, and personal liability. The single most important coverage for international travel is overseas medical — costs for medical treatment and evacuation overseas can easily exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Common exclusions include pre-existing medical conditions (unless declared and accepted), cancellation for a reason not listed in the policy (e.g. changing your mind), high-risk activities like extreme sports unless endorsed, travel to countries with a government 'Do Not Travel' warning (Level 4), incidents involving alcohol or drugs, and unattended baggage in some circumstances. Always read the PDS carefully before your trip and declare pre-existing conditions during purchase.
Medicare does not provide any coverage for medical expenses incurred overseas. Australia has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (RHCA) with 11 countries (including the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand) that provide limited public hospital access, but these agreements do not cover evacuation, private hospital treatment, or the vast majority of medical scenarios you might encounter. Travel insurance with comprehensive medical cover is essential for any international trip.
